New analysis of family-owned SMEs from the Small Business Survey 2024

The FBRF has published a new statistical update, Family SMEs in the UK: Latest findings from the Small Business Survey 2024. The report by Martin Kemp of the FBRF uses the latest government data to show how common family-owned SMEs are among UK employers, how this has changed since 2019, and how family-owned firms compare across size bands, sectors and UK nations.

Drawing on the Department for Business & Trade’s 2024 Longitudinal Small Business Survey of over 8,000 SME employers, the report finds that family-owned firms still make up around three-quarters of all SME employers, with most actively run by the owning family. It also highlights early signs of change among medium-sized family firms, and summarises key evidence on business performance, innovation, investment and the obstacles facing family-owned SMEs in the current economic climate.
